Roman oil lamp with Chariot and Driver
A Roman North African terracotta oil lamp with volute nozzle. The discus is decorated with a charioteer riding a ‘biga’, a light chariot, drawn by two horses. The horses are shown galloping right, whilst the charioteer’s right arm is drawn back, whipping the horses on.
Date: Circa 40-100 AD.
Very Fine condition complete and intact
Length 9 cms (3.54 ins).
Literature: For similar example see item 196: Die Antiken Tonlampen im Kestner Museum Hannover.
NB. Not supplied with display stand.
Provenance: Madame Suzanne Gozlan then by descent.
