Roberts & Belk Cased Set S/Plated Beakers & Flask
We are delighted to offer for sale this rare Roberts & Belk Set of 6 Silver Plated Beakers and a Cut Glass Flask, all neatly fitting inside a Brown Hide Carrying Case, with strap handle. The set has been described as a shooting set, but would be equally useful for other sporting pursuits. There is an identical set to this, only made in hallmarked silver by Roberts & Belk for sale on google for £3,750. The only difference with that one is that this set is made in silver plate and does not have a velvet bag for the flask, or it may have been mislaid.
The 6 beakers are all the same size and are of a slightly fluted shape with flared rim. They are gilt lined and fit neatly inside each other.
Size: 4" (10.15cm) tall by 3 1/8" (8cm) diameter of top rim.
The flask has a reeded pattern of cuts rising from the base and has facetted shoulders. The silver plated stopper is cork lined, has a knurled rim and locks closed by a simple 180 degree turn. It fits inside the beakers.
Size: 4 7/8" (12.4cm) tall.
The carrying case is made of brown hide and is suede lined. The carrying strap has poppers on both sides
Size: 7 5/8" by 4 1/4" diameter of top, tapering to 2 3/4" at the base.
Roberts & Belk started trading in 1810 in Sheffield. It became William Briggs in 1822 and in 1845 he entered into partnership with Samuel Roberts and Joseph Slater, trading as Roberts & Slater from Furnival Street, Sheffield. After Slater retired in 1858, the company became Roberts & Briggs until William Briggs retired in 1863 when Charles Belk joined as a new partner. The first hallmark as R & B was entered in 1864.
In 1879 Samuel Roberts retired and Charles Belk continued using the Roberts & Belk name. As well as the Sheffield factory, the firm had showrooms in Holborn in London. In 1901 the firm became Limited and in 1961 was bought by
C. J. Vander Ltd.
Condition: Very, very good. There is no damage to the glass flask. There are three tiny dents to the bottom rim of one of the beakers and the other five are perfect. There is no wear to the plate although minor scratches from use. The hide case is in very good condition.
