Robert Tavener limited edition signed linocut
This is a large limited edition colour linocut print by Robert Tavener RE (1920-2004) of The Neptune Statue (2) Cheltenham. It is signed, titled and numbered 11/30 in pencil by the artist in the lower margin. It is unframed.
The Neptune Fountain, built in 1893, was designed by Joseph Hall and carved by Boulton & Sons. The fountain was probably modelled on the Trevi Fountain in Rome. It is a monumental statuesque piece depicting Greek god Neptune in a shell-chariot, being drawn by four sea-horses and heralded by conch-shell blowing merman. Neptune sits proudly, clothed in a mantle while clasping a Trident as a symbolic representation of his dominion over the seas, while the horses are depicted in motion, and the entire fountain is enclosed by sculpted balusters and vases filled with flowers.
Robert Tavener made a series of lithographs of Cheltenham.
Size: Paper - 725 x 595 mm
Image 52 x 43 mm
Condition: The print is in good condition. There are some minor handling creases on the margins outside the image, which would be hidden by a mount. A shaped (arched) mount which sits about 2cm outside the image would be an attractive way of displaying the picture within a frame.
Postage: Postage & packing is £8 within the UK. It will be sent rolled in a tube.
