Robert Jobling, The Milkmaid, Near Morpeth %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a beautiful, museum quality oil painting by Robert Jobling (1841-1923), depicting a northern milkmaid on a country path near Morpeth in the county of Northumberland. She walks with a pail in hand past a wild rhubarb patch as cattle graze in the background and a couple walk their dog along the trail. The painting is an oil on canvas and is signed and dated to the lower left. It is mounted in a beautiful gilt, swept frame which complements it perfectly. The painting measures 103cm by 78cm including the frame. The canvas bears an inscription verso (see photo 13) which reads
"The Milkmaid. Scene near Morpeth. By R. Jobling. 1 Shakespeare St. Newcastle on Tyne."
Robert Jobling was a landscape, figure and marine painter born in Newcastle in 1841. He was the son of a glassmaker, and worked in the same trade until he was sixteen years old. Later in life he found work as a painter in the shipyards of the north-east whilst attending the Newcastle School of Art in his spare time. Jobling progressed to become a foreman but instead decided to become a full time artist. By 1866 he was exhibiting his work professionally in the north.
He began exhibiting in London at Suffolk Street in 1878. By 1883, Jobling had his own art studio in Newcastle on Shakespeare Street and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy. Towards the end of his life he painted at his home in Whitley Bay, and attained a prominent position in the Staithes Group of artists. To this day, Jobling remains one of the most respected Northern artists of the Victorian period. Several of his works are currently exhibited at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle alongside other famous Northern artists such as Ralph Hedley, John Falconer Slater and his wife Isa Jobling, nee Thompson.
