Regency Giltwood Overmantel Mirror

SOLD A Good, and Rare, Regency Giltwood & Gilt Gesso Overmantel Mirror with the original triple plate, and unusual decoration of the Caduceus centring on a Scallop Shell, circa 1815. HISTORICAL NOTE Hermes, messenger of the gods in Greek Mythology (or Mercury as the Romans called him), carried messages to & from the earth, his symbol of office being the Caduceus, a wand with wings symbolising his speed, & thought to bestow prosperity & wealth, around which were entwined two snakes, understood to impart wisdom. The Scallop Shell symbolises fertility, so it would seem likely that this mirror was a wedding gift to give hope of prosperity, wealth, wisdom & fertility.
