Regency Curricle Library Bergere Chair By Gillows
A Regency bergère chair known as the "Curricle Chair" in faux rosewood. The beautifully drawn chair having a curved back rail with carved decoration and the canework is in perfect condition. Raised on inswept legs with original gilt lacquered brass castors. Having an associated squab cushion of which is contemporary to the period. Superb condition throughout. English, Circa 1810.
Gillows produced this model of 'curricle' bergère and it appears in various timbers and with various forms of decoration. Bergères of this model were supplied in both mahogany and satinwood to Tatton Park, Cheshire in 1812.
Dimensions: Height: 86.5 cm - 34 Inches, Width: 51 cm - 20 Inches, Depth: 63.5 cm - 25 Inches
Mahogany examples with ebony inlay and carved paterae were supplied for the silk bedroom and cost £5 0s. 0d. The satinwood examples with painted paterae were intended to match the 'Edwards' pattern chairs and were supplied to the Blue bedroom and the Morine and Chintz dressing rooms at a cost of £6 6s. 0d., see N.Goodison and J.Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pl.16A. A pair of 'Curricle' bergères by Gillows in the collection at Lotherton Hall, Yorkshire were originally supplied to Richard Oliver Gascoigne for Parlington Hall, Aberford, see C.Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam and Lotherton Hall, Leeds, 1978, vol.II, 1978, no.508.
