Rare Yew Wood Windsor Chair William Wheatland
A Rare Yew Windsor Chair by William Wheatland, in Excellent condition with a good colour and patina. William Wheatland was from Retford he moved to Gamston in about 1822 then Rockley in about 1825, he was the first chair maker in the tiny village of Rockley he was also a Methodist preacher who built a small chapel in the village but this overstretched his finances and in 1830 he went bankrupt , The workshop was taken over by George Nicholson another important Windsor chair maker who stayed for about ten years. Fred Walker then carried on for the next 30 years, between these three men and there assistants many fine Windsor chairs were made over a period of 50 years,
