Rare solid silver seal by Marrel Frères, Paris.

Marrel Frères solid silver seal, Paris circa 1850.
A wonderful rare and top quality solid silver seal made by the Marrel Frères company in Paris circa 1850. The workmanship, typical of all items from the firm, is of the highest quality and detail.
The intricate design is of a military man, probably of high rank, dressed in a suit of armour and standing inside the stump of a tree. The tree has gnarled bark and ivy growing up it, and the inside on the stump has been gilded.
I have never seen another piece like this which makes me believe that it was a commission piece, made for maybe a military person or someone interested in history.
It is marked “Marrel Frères” and “Paris” around the seal section of the base. The seal is does not have anything etched on it, making it blank and able to be personalised for use.
There are hallmarks impressed into one of the tree branches, and a makers mark to the base.
Very few pieces of work by the factory ever come onto the market, especially small collectible items as most pieces are in international museums or private collections.
It is in very good condition and stands 7 cms tall.
UK Special Delivery, next day and signed is £10.00.
The firm of Marrel Frères was formed by the brothers Jean-Pierre-Nazaire (circa 1798 - 1858) and Antoine-Benoit-Roch (c.1804-1882), sons of a goldsmith from south-eastern France. Jean-Pierre registered a mark as a goldsmith in 1833, while Antoine-Benoit was the modeller for the firm. They became known for their interest in polychromatic objects – employing enamel, painted glass and semi-precious stones in their works.
The firm was known for “objet de curiosité” they also made larger, statement pieces, and objects such as chandeliers.
