Rare Sculptural Alcove C 1780 Alcove shelf georgian
A superb sculptural alcove removed from a cottage in Witney, Oxfordshire dating to around 1780. A delightfully sized alcove painstakingly dry-scraped back to the original blue/green paint. With foliate carving and dentil moulding retaining traces of original gilt paint. Yet as much as we love this beautiful George III alcove from the front, we can’t help loving it from the back to. As a painting often has so much of its story on the back, so this delightfully sculptural piece showing the construction and workmanship beautifully. It is fair to say we are smitten. A very weighty piece due to the construction method.
