Rare Edinburgh Crystal 1910 Thistle Glasses
A pair of early Edinburgh Crystal hand-cut, lead crystal glasses in a rare thistle pattern. The bulbous base of the bowl is faceted to resemble a thistle bract, while the fluted middle resembles an unopened flower. The engraving is with the thistle leaves in a 'wave' form around the gently flared top. The stem has a faceted knop and the base is star cut. The glasses are unmarked as was often the case with early pieces.
These glasses are of exceptional quality and are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or scratches and minimal wear on the foot. Their use was possibly for a dessert wine, their size is unusual being 13 cm high and 8 1/2 cm diameter at the lip.
The thistle pattern was first introduced in 1896. These are early examples (circa 1910) of the pattern development, as seen by the leaves which have been copper wheel engraved in a continuous band. After WW1 the company started making knopless glasses with individual thistle plants which have been sandblasted on using a template.
The thistle pattern remains a most highly sought-after pattern, with early shape and cuts , engraving particularly prized. Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
The Company is a distance selling business and as such abides by all current HM Government consumer regulations that apply to pre-owned, second hand, antique items sold online.
We welcome purchases from all over the world, however, we do not take any responsibility or pay for import charges and taxes that non UK purchasers may accrue.
