Born in Birmingham of Chipping Campden descent, David's father was an engineer and a keen draughtsman and his mother was a ballet dancer and teacher. From an early age he was encouraged to draw. His love of landscape and country life led him into farming but he later joined the art and antique dealer H W Keil, working both in London and in Broadway, Worcestershire. From the age of 17 David began to sell his work steadily, his past work experience playing an important part in his enduring preoccupation with landscape and architecture, and by 1974 he had become a professional water-colourist.
David continued to develop his artistic talent with his much sought after wood engravings, which by their nature require careful and deliberate attention to detail. He was inspired to adopt this medium under the guidance of William T Rawlinson following the renowned wood engraver's 1979 retrospective exhibition.
Whilst continuing with his representational work, David has recently embarked on abstract works sixteen of which were exhibited at Bath Spa University in February 2004 and at Goldsmiths College, London in November 2004.
