Subject: Giuseppe Garibaldi
This is a beautifully painted Victorian Portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the foremost military figure and popular hero of the age of Italian unification (1807-1882).
The painting is signed Jd Mercier, with some additional script which is unclear.
Original gilt frame and arched top slip.
Belfast framers label to the back.
For his battles on behalf of freedom in Latin America, Italy, and later France, Garibaldi has been dubbed the "Hero of Two Worlds."
Good antique condition. The painting has been cleaned and relined. Craquelure remains in places.
