Large and attractive mid 19th.c. portrait of a lady. Good costume detail, the sitter is shown wearing a grey silk dress with pleated bodice and shawl, a fine lace bonnet and collar and holding a book. In oil on canvas, signed S.Howell and dated 1856 in the lower right hand corner. Presented unframed on a wooden stretcher. Unfortunately the subject is unrecorded, though the artist is believed to be Samuel Howell who is listed as being active between 1829 – 1856. Very good condition with just a small area of damage to the hand.
