Portrait of a Lady by Albert Lipczinski Dated 1909
Portrait of a lady in oil on canvas by the acclaimed Polish born artist Albert Lipczinski dated 1909. Half length portrait of a cheerful looking older lady in a black and white gown with matching bonnet, gold brooch and chain. Beautifully painted with some fine confident brushwork to the face and dress. Dated 1909 together with an unusual monogram (of the artist’s head in silhouette) in the upper right corner. With a large clearly signature on the rear of the canvas. Excellent condition, presented unframed on the original stretcher.

Though born in Poland Albert Lipczinski (1876-1974) is strongly associated with the city of Liverpool where he studied under Augustus John (who also invited him to paint here in North Wales). Something of a radical, his work was featured in the 1911 post impressionist exhibition at the Sandon Studio Society, focus of the city’s bohemian set, alongside works by Picasso, Gaugin and Matisse. Lipczinski married Augustus John’s model Elizabeth Milne but his political outlook and background in the German Empire was a problem during the First World War leading to his internment and eventual expulsion from the country. He settled with Elizabeth on the Baltic coast of Poland, surviving the Nazi and Soviet takeovers of his homeland and continuing to paint into his old age. In 2011 the Birkenhead gallery held an exhibition of his Liverpool works and the book 1911: Art in Revolution: The Life and Times of Albert Lipczinski was published.
