This is a Pinchbeck Lava Cameo Bracelet with a tongue snap fastener and safety chain attached. The bracelet consists of six individual Lava cameos in cream, olive and terracotta colours, in rub over settings with a twisted wire border. There are four repairs on the backs of the cameos where jump rings have been replaced.
Total length.................185mm.
Each cameo is 30mm x 25mm.
The Italians have always been renowned for their cameo carvings. Even in Roman times craftsmen on the shores of the Mediterranean were converting shells and red coral into objects of artistic beauty and commercial value.
The trade flourished in such objects again in Georgian and early Victorian times, and the skill had not diminished. The biggest buyers were the Empire-rich British, discovering the joys of European travel.
One of the musts for Victorian travellers who braved the bandit raids to cross the Alps in packed coaches to see Italy was a visit to Pompeii. They were eager to carry home momentoes, and the Italian craftsmen came up with a new idea to satisfy demand – cameos in lava.
