Persian Heriz karadja Runner
We have for sale a lovely traditional Persian Heriz Karadja wool runner dating to somewhere around the early to mid 20th Century.
This very usefully sized Persian and attractive runner consists of a cotton foundation tied in the Hamadan manner with symetrical knots secured with single weft shoots. The runner is knotted with a typical Karadja design in reds, blues, oranges and pink incorporating three borders (two minor and one major) around seven centrally arranged medalions along its vertical axis.
The rug is 10.8 feet (330cm) long and 2.9 feet (89cm) wide, and is in a good to very good condition other than some slight fading to the left, some loss to the pile in the upper middle left outer minor and the major border shown in Image 4 and some staining to the fringe shown in Image 1 to the bottom right.
The town/village of Karadja (variously spelt as Karaja, Karaje or Karajeh) is located in the Azerbaijani district 35 miles Northwest of Tabriz. Karadja rugs are hand woven by women with rectilinear designs of reds, blues, oranges and pinks consisting of two or three minor borders and one major border around a number of centrally arranged large medalions. The foundations of the Karadja rugs are exclusively cotton with lines of symetrical knots secured by single wefts. Karadja rugs are normally small or elongated forming runners. They are hard wearing and ideal for use in areas with a high footfall such as hallways.
