Paul H.Ellis Ex.1882-1908 Oil Thames Timberyard
We are offering for sale this lovely antique oil on canvas by the artist PAUL H. ELLIS, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. It is inscribed verso Timber Yard Pangbourne on Thames P.H.Ellis. The painting depicts a timber yard on the banks of the Thames, with a stack of cut timber to the right of the buildings. There is a woman wearing a bonnet sitting on a large tree trunk behind the building. On the opposite bank of the river, a herd of cows is watering. The painting has been executed in great detail, particularly the plants in the foreground, and is one of two by this artist that we are currently listing.
PAUL H. ELLIS, who exhibited from 1882-1908, was a Birmingham artist, who resided at 40 Villa Road, Handsworth, but later moved to Rhyl in Wales. He painted flowers, landscapes and oriental scenes in both oil and watercolour.
He exhibited widely, including 1 painting at the Royal Academy, 10 at the Tooley Gallery, 7 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 7 at the Walker in Liverpool, 7 at Birmingham City Art Gallery, 2 at Manchester City Art Gallery, 2 at the Royal Oil Painters Institute, 2 at the Dudley Gallery and 5 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour.

His London exhibitions can be found in Graves Dictionary. The record price achieved for one of his paintings in recent years was £26,000 at Sotheby's.
