PASTEL PORTRAIT BRIGADIER GENERAL PERCY DOUGLAS HAMILTON CB CMG (1867-1936) BY OLIVER SENIOR ARCA (1880-1944)

We are pleased to offer for sale this brilliantly executed half-length pastel portrait painting of Brigadier General Percy Douglas Hamilton CB CMG by the artist Oliver Senior, who has signed the painting SENIOR in the top left hand corner.

Percy Douglas Hamilton was born in The Cape, South Africa in 1867. By 1871, the family was living in Kensington. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Gentleman Cadet on 24th December 1884. He became a Lieutenant in 1886 and a Captain in 1897. During WWI, Major Hamilton commanded the 5th Siege Battery which departed for France on 27th September 1914. By the end of January 1915, he was ordered to take command of the Harwich Garrison. Unfortunately, we have not been unable to establish his locations during the rest of WWI, and, although we were informed that he was at Gallipoli, we have been unable to verify this. Apart from the usual WWI decorations, he became a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George and a Companion of the Order of the Bath and was awarded the Military Order of Savoy which is an Italian order.

We believe that by the end of WWI, he was a Lieutenant Colonel and Temporary Brigadier General, but was promoted to Brigadier General circa 1927. He was retired by 1934 and died on 15th May 1936, leaving his widow Adeline Diana (nee Sweeting) (1889-1964), who he had married in Marylebone in 1916.

Oliver Senior ARCA, 1880-1944, was born in Nottingham on 21st September 1880. He was a portrait, figure and landscape painter in oils, watercolours and pastels and an etcher, colour printer and mural painter. He studied at Manchester School of Art 1896-1903 and at the Royal College of Art in London 1903-1907, after which he travelled in France & Belgium. From 1908-1917, he taught painting at Sheffield Technical School of Art, where he taught Stanley Royle RCA RBA. He was called up into the RAF, originally the Royal Flying Corps, in 1917 and after a year in the RAF Reserve, he was discharged finally in 1920. He became an Art Teacher at Eastbourne School of Art from 1919 onwards and was still working there in 1939, so may have continued until his death in 1944. He left a widow and three children. He signed his work either SENIOR in capitals or with his monogram of an S inside an O.

Biographical details for this artist may be found in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters and Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child.

The pastel has been newly framed in an ornate gilt frame and its original gilt slip , totalling 4", and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
