Just arrived, a rare pair of large vintage apothecary bottles, directly from an important private collection.
These bottles, we would suggest date to around 1900. They are offered in good condition without damage but obvious signs of previous use, we preferred to leave them as found as opposed to 'cleaning' them.
The glass as is appropriate, displaying various flaws & bubbles associated with blown glass.
They have signs of previous contents and some discolouration to the stopper seals.
The overall appearance of the glass reflects a somewhat smoky colour.
We are also listing another much earlier carboy, please see our other items.
History:
The word carboy is from the Persian qarābah (قرابه), from Middle Persian Karāvah.
Arabic also borrowed it as qarrāba, meaning "big jug"
Originally filled with coloured liquids, this being the 'trade sign' for the apothecary (later referred to as chemist)
Research suggests that further back in history the colours had significant meanings reflecting the four elements.
At some stage later the use of the colours seems to have changed, the apothecary used the colour to warn travelers, a red liquid signaled to avoid the town due to a plague or quarantine, while green liquid signaled that all was well.
