Pair of Yew & Elm Windsor Armchairs c.1840.
Matched pair of mid 19th.c. Windsor armchairs c.1840. Yew wood top rails, hoops and back splats over carved elm seats. Turned arm supports and legs joined with a crinoline stretchers. With a clear stamp to the side of one seat for the workshop of George Nicholson of Rockley in Wiltshire. Excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops with great colour and patina.
A Methodist Minister, Nicholson took over the workshop of William Wheatland (also a minister and the founder of the Rockley tradition of chair making) in the hamlet of Rockley in 1830, and produced antique furniture there until approximately 1841.
