Pair of Victorian shooting portrait oil paintings
A very interesting pair of Victorian period oil portraits on artist's board both with a shooting theme. The pair show both figures full length and dressed for the shoot with one with his dog. The paintings are inscribed on the reverse:
'Portrait of Thomas Fox late of Coldstream Guards and spaniel Gunshot. Over Norton. 1893'
'Portrait of Sydney Fox by W.G.Dawkins. Dec 1891. Over Norton'
The paintings are both by the same artist and most likely the sitters are father and son, who ran the shoot in Over Norton, Oxfordshire. The pair are signed by monogram and dated. The work is competent but I cannot locate the artist and he was most likely a talented amateur on the shoot. The pair have been professionally cleaned and that is all. The pair are in Victorian period gilt frames, which have had some repair and are later regilded. The pair are very decorative and interesting and have a great country house look.
