Pair of Regency Fashion Plates - Full Dresses
This is a pair of original early Regency fashion plates from the "Magazine of Female Fashions of London and Paris", which first appeared in 1798 and continued until 1806. The 110 issues were bound into three volumes: 1798-1800, 1801-03 and 1804-06. The Magazines were "Printed for R Phillips of 71 St Paul's Church Yard".
These two engravings with later hand-colouring depicting London Full and Walking Dresses, dated April 1800 and January 1803 respectively, are displayed within ivory mounts with gold line and pretty gilded wooden frames. Labels are attached to reverse providing information about the publication from which these plates were removed.
Full dress was worn only for very formal occasions, such as a ball or a formal reception or party. Walking Dresses, on the other hand, an example of which is shown on the April 1800 engraving, were worn on outdoor occasions when one wanted to see and be seen. They are often referred to as Promenade Dresses, a very literal definition of their purpose.
Dimensions: Frame 31.5 x 23 cm, Image (mount internal) 21 x 12.5 cm
Condition: The prints are in excellent condition. The frames being relatively new are also in immaculate condition.
Postage & packing: £8 within the UK. Please contact us for a postal quote if you would like the pair sent abroad.
