Alfred Vickers was landscape and marine artist who was born on 10 September, 1786 in Newington Surrey to Thomas Samuel Vickers & Hannah Vickers. He was a self-taught artist who found fame later in life as the ‘Cockney Constable’. In 1808, he married Agnes Middleton in London and together they lived in the Lambeth area, later moving to 8 Barton Street, Westminster with their family His son Alfred Gomersal Vickers (1810-1837) also became a landscape painter.
He began exhibiting at the British Institution from 1828 and made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1831. A year later he started exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists. He was a prolific exhibitor and over the subsequent 40 years exhibited a total of 67 at the Royal Academy, 125 at the British Institute and 79 at the Royal Society of British Artists. By 1837, he had moved to 7 Islington Green and stayed in the area until around 1861. From his base in London he would travel around Britain visiting areas such as the Isle of Wight, North Wales, Derbyshire and Yorkshire as well as the Thames Valley to paint coastal views, rivers and landscapes. He also visited the continent travelling to Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland. He painted in a distinctive palette of pale greens and a light and sparkling style.
Vickers spent his final years living at 1 Norfolk Villas, Edmonton where he died on 20 November, 1868. Many examples of his work can be found in public collections and art galleries including the Glasgow Museum, Kingston History Centre, Kirklees Museum, Leicester Museum, National Trust, Orleans House Gallery, Sheffield Museum, Ulster Museum, Wednesbury Museum, The Wilson and Wolverhampton Art Gallery.
Dimensions are 59.7cm wide. 44.3cm Tall and 5cm deep.
