Pair of Mary Gregory Cranberry Wine Decanters
A pair of 10 inch Wine Decanters, dating to the latter part of the 19th century circa 1890, these are dimple blown cranberry glass bodies with clear ball stoppers and clear and drawn out ribbed swept handles. Originating from Bohemia, the white enamel decoration of the young girl and young boy is a a typical design, in this case really well executed, good detail and actually pretty figures adding to the quality. We have tried to ensure the illustrations are sharp enough to highlight the level of decor on this pair.
These are handmade and as such discrepancies do occur as they have in this instant, one is slightly higher than the other, however they can be regarded as a pair (same design, same glass same decor and as far as we can tell same painter).
Condition is excellent and condition is everything with glass and these have no faults to report, the glass is free of chips, nicks and cracks, the enamelling is without loss.
Size: Height - Girl 25 cm and Boy between 26 and 27 cm, diameter at the widest is 13 cm for both. They weigh as a pair 1703 gm.
REFERENCE NOTE:
The term 'Mary Gregory' is a style of glass rather than a manufacturer. There is a belief that a lady in USA named Mary Gregory painted scenes of children on thousands of items of glassware. However it is now known that this style of glass originated from Bohemia, not America. Mary Gregory did live in America, and worked for the Boston and Sandwich Glass company during the 1880's, but she painted landscapes, not children. Whatever the truth, the name has stuck, and this style of glassware is still defined as Mary Gregory glass. Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
The Company is a distance selling business and as such abides by all current HM Government consumer regulations that apply to pre-owned, second hand, antique items sold online.
We welcome purchases from all over the world, however, we do not take any responsibility or pay for import charges and taxes that non UK purchasers may accrue.
