Pair of Marine Seascape Paintings. Reuben Chappell
Artist: Reuben Chappell. (1870-1940)

Painted 1909.(One dated 29/1/09, the other 7/2/09)
Oil on Canvas.
Framed dimensions: 34.5 inches x 24 inches
A rare and informative pair of quality period Ship portraits, illustrating a known Sailing Vessel from both Port and Starboard sides, and rigged for working in differing conditions.
The portraits show the 2 masted Gaff Ketch, 'Eva' of London. Captain J Voysey. This was a coastal vessel, possibly a Post Boat or a Pilot Boat.
One portrait shows the vessel heading out to sea, in choppy weather rigged with reduced sails. The other is in full sail returning to land in calmer conditions.
The Artist.
Reuben Chappell (1870-1940) is one of the country’s best known and collected ship portrait artists. He came from Goole in Yorkshire, where he painted ships on the Humber. He moved to Par,in Cornwall in 1904 and continued to paint vessels visiting the china clay ports.
This style of painting is known as 'Pier head Painting'.

'Eva' (official no. 11910), a 76 ton Ketch, built at Topsham Devon in 1863, for a John Row of Exeter.
She was sold to Isaac Norfolk of Knottingley in Yorkshire who changed her Port Of Registry to London. In later years she returned to Devon.
The registered owner in 1909 was William Voysey.
Captain: James Frank Voysey. Master Mariner.
Paintings condition - excellent.
The paintings have been professionally cleaned and re lacquered.
There is a small patch repair to the rear of one canvas.
