Pair of large portrait drawings By J.S.Templeton
A stunning pair of life size, quarter length, portrait drawings by John Samuelson (Samuel) Templeton fl.1819-1857. The quality of the work is quite superb and the detail amazingly lifelike. The pair are in excellent condition with only the odd minor foxing mark. The two are both signed Templeton Fecit and dated 1849. The pair have had later mounts but are otherwise all original. The gilt frames are the original, they have had some old repairs and been overgilded. The overgilding has worn back revealing some of the original gilding underneath which gives the whole a wonderful faded country house look.
John Samuelson/Samuel Templeton is most widely known as a lithographic artist creating prints from other people’s portraits. He was born in Dublin and attended the Dublin Society’s drawing school in 1819. He moved to London and exhibited landscapes firstly at the Royal Academy from 1830-1833 and from 1841-1857 he switched to exhibiting portraits.
The history of these works indicates that they were exhibited at The Royal Academy exhibition in 1849. The sitters are listed in the exhibition catalogue as Lady Caroline Turnor (No. 830) and Algernon Turnor 4th son of Mr and Lady Caroline Turnor (No. 908). The portraits would therefore be of Lady Caroline Finch-Hatton (1817-1888) daughter of the 10th Earl of Winchilsea and his wife Lady Georgina Charlotte Graham. She married Christopher Turnor on February 2, 1837. Their younger child, and only son, Algernon, was born in November 1845 this would be the other sitter.
The pair have a huge decorative impact and instant English country house grandeur.
