Pair of Irish Portraits Attributed To Martin Cregan

1 of 6
Pair of mid 19th.c. portraits in oil on canvas attributed to the celebrated Irish portrait painter, and founder of the Royal Hibernian Society, Martin Cregan of Dublin. Half length portraits of matching composition and size. Quite a bit of surface damage and holes to both. Presented unframed on their original stretchers.
Paper labels to the rear identify the sitters as Sarah Moss (1784 – 1863) and Mary Moss (1819 – 1887) and record that the portraits were painted from a photograph (for Sarah) and from life at Kilternan near Dublin by Martin Cregan RHA in 1866 and 1867 respectively. The Mosses were a family of Cheshire cotton manufacturers who came to Ireland in the late 18th century to open several mills around Dublin.
