Pair of French Regence Style Giltwood Armchairs
An Exeptional pair of French Regence Style giltwood armchairs c.1900
The chairs with upholstered seats, backs and arm pads with show frames centred on a finely carved shell on the crest rail. The front, back and side seat rails all serpentine with carved scallop shells to the centre and the cabriole legs terminating in hoof feet. The knees of the chair are finely carved with angled shells and foliage and the tops of the arms are carved with an interesting guilloche design incorporating diamonds or lozenges that is particularly finely executed. Many of the carved elements on the chair are placed upon prepared backgrounds that have been carved in lower relief-clearly these chairs were produced by a very talented chairmaker and no expense was spared in their construction.
These chairs were produced after a French regence original dating to c.1715 and are extremely decorative. They retain their original tapestry covers.
