Pair of Early 19th.c. Scottish Portraits.
Pair of early 19th.c. oil on canvas portraits of a lady and gentleman c.1820. Of Scottish interest, the sitters are believed to be Rev. James Porteous (died 1832), Minister of Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh and his wife Katherine Kinnear (married 15th. April 1794). Sensitively painted, the lady’s face being particularly well done, unfortunately the artist is unrecorded. Interesting Regency costume detail here – note the lady’s close fitting lace bonnet and high waisted dress with pearl brooch and a gold chatelaine on a chord, whilst her husband wears the classic high collar to his jacket and white silk neck scarf. Excellent condition, recently relaid onto canvas, presented unframed on wooden stretchers.
