Pair of Black Forest polychrome painted jesters
This fine and rare pair of exceptionally well carved and composed lime wood figures depict medieval jesters dancing in a tantalising manner for the entertainment of their ordinance. They are both dressed similarly in rich and elaborate costumes with bells sewn around one leg for sound. The one is dressed in red and gold. He has long flowing hair held in place with a woven gold band. The other, a green and red costume with an exotic headdress mounted with a gargoyle mask. He has a theatrical style beard. Both carvings display amazing detail and wonderful movement in their complicated stance. They have their original fine hand painted polychrome finish which is in superb condition and shows amazing detail especially to their faces with only slight age related wear to the high points caused through age and handling. These exceptional carvings would have been the work of a master carver and they offer a rare opportunity to acquire for a collection or home.
