Pair of Arts & Crafts Nursing Chairs, Stamped JG
This lovely pair of antique occasional / nursing chairs do require some sympathetic restoration and the rush seats need replacing. They are constructed from what we believe to be oak, which has been painted black. We would estimate them to date from c.1880, and they are very much in the arts & crafts style. The seats of the chairs lean backwards slightly, and the chairs are supported on rounded legs at the front and square swept legs at the back with an unusual arrangement of rounded stretchers in between. The chairs appear to have maker's stamps impressed into the wood on the back edge of the seat. One of the chairs is stamped with what be believe to be J.G. The stamp on the other chair is not completely legible, but one of the letters is a M.
Condition - Overall this is a nice pair of antique arts and crafts chairs, but they do require some sympathetic restoration. The rush seats are damaged and require replacement. The woodwork of the chairs is quite worn and the black paint is rubbed away in places. Both the chairs have some woodworm damage, and the chair stamped J.G. has some significant woodworm damage to one of the front legs - this has been treated. The other chair (stamped M) has had two small screws fitted to the underneath of the top rail at some point.
The approx. measurements are as follows -
Overall - 79cm high, 40.5cm wide, 44.5cm deep (to maximums) 44.5cm high to seat. Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
We can arrange delivery of both smaller items and furniture - please contact us for details and a quote. Customers are also welcome to use their own couriers if preferred.
Payment can be made by PayPal, bank transfer, cheque [UK only], and cash on collection.
