Pair Of Anglo-Saxon Warrior Figures

A well-cast pair of spelter figures depicting Anglo-Saxon warriors, each rendered in animated martial poses and mounted on circular, turned wooden plinths with brass title plaques reading “ANGLO-SAXON.” The figures retain a dark, bronzed patina typical of late 19th-century decorative metalwork, designed to emulate true bronze at a more accessible cost.
One figure is modelled as an archer, standing in a balanced contrapposto stance with bow drawn and arrow nocked, his attention focused along the line of aim. He wears a conical helmet and chainmail byrnie over a belted tunic, with carefully defined textures distinguishing the interlinked mail from the softer folds of fabric. The modelling extends to the fitted leggings and boots, with a suggestion of additional arrows at his side.
The companion figure depicts a warrior advancing into combat, raising an axe overhead while gripping a round shield with a pronounced central boss. His pose is more forceful and forward-driving, conveying imminent impact. His attire includes a helmet and a studded or scaled cuirass over a short mail skirt, again executed with crisp surface detail. The shield is ornamented with incised patterning, adding visual interest and depth.
Both figures stand on naturalistic bases incorporating uneven terrain and battlefield motifs, contributing to the narrative energy of the pair.
