Pair Armchairs with Lady & The Unicorn Tapestries
Fine pair of 18th.c. style carved walnut high back open armchairs c.1900. Backrest and seat upholstered in the original and well preserved woolwork tapestry covers woven after the great series of Flemish tapestries known as ‘The Lady & The Unicorn’. Shaped arms with carved acanthus leaf detail, large sprung seat raised on turned legs with carved lion’s paw feet and a carved and pierced front stretcher. Excellent condition, the frames have been cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
Regarded as one of the greatest surviving medeival artworks and now to be found in the Musée de Cluny in Paris, the Lady & The Unicorn tapestries are interpreted as representing the five senses plus love. Each features the same noble lady, a pennant with three crescent moons, a unicorn and lion – both important heraldic symbols. They are believed to have been produced in Flanders around 1500 for a member of the French noble family of Le Viste whose arms feature in the designs.
Dimensions: width 27″, depth 33″, height 47″. Please contact us for more images, delivery and shipping quotes. Alternatively you are welcome to view and collect at our large warehouse showroom in Llandudno Junction, North Wales (approximately 45mins from Chester). We have a large and ever changing selection of genuine good quality antique furniture of all types and have twice been shortlisted for the Home and Antiques Magazine Antique Shop of the Year Award. 01492 580022.
