Orlando Greenwood RBA, The Tup, Oil on Canvas
This is a delightfully painted and very characterful oil painting of a ram with a ewe entitled 'The Tup' by Orlando Greenwood RBA. The painting shows the Tup in all his glory looking back at us as he stands close to his ewe.
About the artist
Orlando Greenwood 1892-1989, was born in Nelson, Lancashire in 1892. From the age of 13 he worked in his uncle's cotton mill, but in 1913, he commenced studying at Goldsmith's College School of Art in London. In 1914, he joined the Royal Engineers for service in WWI and resumed his studies in 1919.
He became known as the mill worker turned artist and painted still life, self portraits, landscapes etc. in oils, watercolours and pastels, in an eclectic range of styles. He also designed posters for London Underground and Great Western Railways, as well as advertisements for London department stores like Libertys.
He exhibited 1920-1933, at the Royal Academy (3 Paintings), Royal Society of British Artists (32), Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (1) and other London galleries.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1920 and a Full Member in 1922.
The painting is on canvas, framed under glass. There is some craquelure to the top otherwise this is in very good condition. The painting measures 42.5 cms by 40 cms excluding the frame. It is beautifully complimented by its original softly gilded deep frame.
