Oil Portrait of Louisa Cooke with Her Dog Mr Quiz

Portrait of Louisa Cooke with Her Dog “Mr. Quiz” — A Regency Oil on Panel with Trafalgar Provenance (circa 1802), in the Manner of George Romney
Subject and Medium
A rare and intimate Regency-era portrait depicting Louisa Cooke in a white empire-line dress with red slippers, shown outdoors skipping with her dog “Mr. Quiz”, held on a lead. The scene is unusually personal for the period: a domestic, affectionate image that reflects the private world behind the public history of the Trafalgar generation.
British Provincial School, circa 1802 (in the manner of George Romney, 1734–1802)
Medium: Oil on panel
Panel size: 26.6 cm × 20.3 cm
Composition and Technique
The composition presents a poised full-length figure within a softly atmospheric landscape. Louisa’s luminous white dress is placed against a darker ground, creating strong figure-to-background contrast. Mr. Quiz stands attentively at her side, reinforcing the portrait’s tone of loyalty and domestic steadiness. The work is figure-led, with careful costume definition and a direct, quietly expressive gaze—qualities consistent with refined provincial portrait practice around 1800 and the broader idiom associated with the Romney generation.
Louisa Cooke and “Mr. Quiz”: A Documented Companion
Mr. Quiz is not an incidental motif. He is recorded by name in family correspondence. In 1805, Captain John Cooke writes to Louisa:
“I hope Mr Quiz is very well… and that you don’t intend to take him to Exeter with you. I think you should leave him at home to guard the House.”
This documentation elevates the picture beyond a charming portrait: it becomes a historically anchored likeness with an unusually verifiable personal narrative, preserving sitter and companion in both paint and letter.
Historical Significance
Louisa Cooke was the wife—and later widow—of Captain John Cooke, RN (1762–1805), commander of HMS Bellerophon, celebrated for its prominent role at the Battle of Trafalgar. Captain Cooke was killed during the action. Bellerophon later gained enduring fame as the ship upon which Napoleon surrendered.
The present portrait captures the home-front counterpart to that naval history: a quiet, emotionally resonant image that carries additional weight when viewed against what followed. For collectors seeking works with museum-grade narrative and documentary depth, it represents a compelling opportunity.
Attribution
