Oil Portrait of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson – Dated 1954 – After John Adams Elder – American Civil War
A mid-20th century oil on canvas portrait of Confederate General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson (1824–1863), signed and dated 1954.
The composition follows the well-known 19th-century prototype popularised by John Adams Elder, one of the most recognised portrait formats associated with Jackson and Confederate Civil War iconography. This example reflects the continued interest in historic American military subjects during the mid-20th century.
Subject
Thomas Jonathan Jackson was born in 1824 in Clarksburg, Virginia. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he served in the Mexican–American War before becoming a professor at the Virginia Military Institute.
At the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, Jackson joined the Confederate Army. He earned the nickname “Stonewall” at the First Battle of Bull Run. In 1862 he assumed command of the Second Corps of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee.
His Shenandoah Valley Campaign remains one of the most studied manoeuvre campaigns in American military history. As commander of the Second Corps, he played significant roles in the Seven Days Battles, Second Manassas, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. He was mortally wounded in 1863 following the Battle of Chancellorsville.
Jackson’s early death cemented his place within Civil War history and led to the widespread reproduction of his likeness in engravings and painted portraits, many derived from the Elder composition upon which this work is based.
Medium and Technique
Oil on canvas.
Jackson is depicted in three-quarter profile wearing Confederate frock coat with brass buttons, belt and cap. His composed expression and formal posture are characteristic of 19th-century military portraiture.
The background is subdued, drawing attention to the sitter. The palette is restrained, with greys, umbers and muted gold tones.
Technical features include:
Layered oil application
Careful tonal modelling of facial features
Subtle glazing in shadow areas
Controlled highlights to uniform details
Disciplined, visible brushwork
The painting reflects mid-20th century historical revival practice while consciously preserving 19th-century academic conventions.
Artist
Signed to the reverse:
C. Wood 1954
The inscription appears contemporary with the execution. While the artist is not widely recorded, the handling demonstrates familiarity with traditional academic portrait methods and established Civil War iconography.
Frame
Housed in a later gilt moulded frame of traditional form, complementing the restrained palette and enhancing presentation.

A cabinet-scale portrait suitable for display in a study, library or curated collection of Americana or military history.
Provenance
Private collection.
