Oil Painting Child Portrait Violet Lindsay Manners
This engaging and charming portrait depicts the aristocrat, Violet Lindsay, at just 2 years of age.
She would go on to become Marion Margaret Violet Manners, Duchess of Rutland (1856 - 1937), an important and celebrated noblewoman and, in time, a successful artist in her own right.
Interesting provenance, in the form of an old, hand-written label is attached verso and reads:
"Copy of portrait of Violet Lindsay aged 2. Painted in Dublin. Violet Lindsay, daughter of Col. the Hon Charles Hugh Lindsay (Master of the House of Dublin Castle) & great grand daughter (through her mother)of Lord Kilmaine, became the wife of Henry, 8th Duke of Rutland. Given to her daughter Violet - mother of David, Lord Elcho, Martin Charteris, Nicholas Benson, Barnaby Benson & Jeremy Benson - in 1935."
There is also a period framers label for J. Middleton, 231, King's Road, Chelsea S.W.3.
The back of the canvas is stamped:
'Prepared by C. Roberson & Co. Ltd, Long Acre London'
As the painting was gifted to the sitter's daughter - also named Violet - in 1935, we know the work to be over 86 years old....and possibly somewhat older, and as noted in the provenance, it is a copy of a much, much earlier work.
The painting appears to be unsigned.
A very charming piece and highly decorative.

PriceSold DimensionsSight-size, 43.5 cms diameter. Overall, including the frame: 54.5 cms diameter. Category Antique Pictures / Engravings / Art > Antique Oil Paintings Date c.1930 1930s Antiques Material Oil Painting on Canvas Origin Irish Condition In overall good condition for age and displaying well. There are some superficial (surface) dark spots / marks to the portrait, as shown...probably fly lime....and I have decided to sell the painting as is and not have these cleaned from the surface. The painting may have been retouched in the distant past, but there are no major faults and the surface integrity is fine, as is the canvas and stretcher. The frame is in similarly good, unrestored, antique condition with a lovely aged finish. The brown paper backing verso has been torn to reveal the circular stretcher, but the old provenance label remains intact. Item code as693a159 Status Sold
