Oil painting beach scene by Oscar Matthiesen
A interesting work in oil on canvas by Danish artist Oscar Matthiesen 1861-1957. The painting shows two horses pulling a wagon that is being urged on by a man following behind. The beach and the sea is beautifully worked in many colours much in the manner of the Impressionists, as are the horses, wagon and figure who while not painted in great detail display brilliantly the work and effort of movement on the sand. The painting has been professionally cleaned and a hole repaired. There is a monogram and date to the lower left: OM 1939, and the artist name is also on a plaque on the frame. The frame is the original and in good untouched condition. The whole is an interesting later work by a fine international artist and has a great feel of warmth and light about it.
Oscar Matthiesen (1861-1957) was educated at the royal art academy in Denmark in 1878 he also studied in Paris in 1890, later he worked as an art teacher and professor at the royal art academy in Copenhagen and at the Academy in Berlin. Matthiesen worked primarily with portraits and landscapes. One of Matthiesen's most famous works is the painting “Rigsdagsbilledet “ It took 6 years to complete and was a composition of 225 portraits in one scene. Each of the 225 characters were done after live models, and the painting is today considered as one of most important Danish works. It is today exhibited at the parliament in Copenhagen. In 1893 Matthiesen travelled to the United States where he worked with the Danish part of the exhibition for the World Fair in Chicago. Matthiesens works has been exhibited worldwide like at the World fair in Chicago in 1893, The Glasgow School of Artists. Chicago 1895. The Brooklyn museum in 1927. Paris: 1925. Berlin: 1908.
