Oil On Canvas, Pendle Hill, F Cawthorne 1931
We have for sale the perfect picture for someone who has a love for the countryside around Pendle Hill in East Lancashire, a superb oil painting on canvas of Pendle Hill from Downham by the very good Clitheroe based artist Frederick Cawthorne.
The painting depicts a view from towards the top of the hill near the church in Downham village, looking down into the village and towards Pendle Hill. The painting is signed and dated 1931 to the bottom left hand side.
The painting is approximately 28.5 inches (72.4cm) wide and 20.5 inches (52cm) high including the gilt frame. The painting and the frame and are both in an excellent condition although there are one or two very small marks to the side of the frame.
About the Artist
Lancashire artist Frederick Charles Cawthorne, son of Elijah Cawthorne (Artist) was born in 1877 and became active as a painter around 1901. He lived in Clitheroe and mostly painted scenes around North Yorkshire and Lancashire. He was one of only a few good artists who painted scenes in and around Pendle and the Ribble Valley. His works are immediately recognisable, and much of the subject matter has changed very little over the past 80 - 90 years. As a consequence paintings by F Cawthorne are very popular with those who have an affiliation with Lancashire and the North of England.Frederick Cawthorne died in 1940.
