This auction is for a large oil on canvas by the artist NILS (NIELS) HANS CHRISTIANSEN RAC, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a dramatic sunset scene, with the setting sun framed between the tall rugged sides of the fjord. There is shipping of various sizes out on the waters of the fjord and, along the banks to the right, a scattering of wooden houses typical of the region.

NILS HANS CHRISTIANSEN, 1850-1922, was a Danish artist, born in Esbjerg, Jutland in 1850. He worked mainly in Norway and Denmark, although it appears that he spent a considerable amount of time in the UK around the turn of the century, as he exhibited with many of the popular galleries at this time. The subject matter includes fjords, winter skating scenes, dramatic sunsets and highland scenes with stags. His paintings were very popular with the Victorian and Edwardian public and collected extensively. He often painted pairs, morning and evening scenes. He was a Member of the Royal Academy of Copenhagen. He died in England in 1922.

There are 4 of his paintings in the National Collection, 1 in Epping Forest District Museum, 1 in Warwickshire Museum and 1 at Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge. These can be viewed online at BBC - Your Paintings.

The painting is framed in a 3" ornate, pierced, swept gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition Excellent condition. The painting has been relined at some stage and is now in excellent condition, with no paint loss, stretcher marks or craquelure. The frame is in very good condition.
