Kolesnikov's , being a boy showed his artistic talent early, he received his first lessons from visiting iconographers. In 1896, his drawings were selected for the All-Russian Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod. Thanks to this, the future artist received an award in the form of a scholarship for art education. In 1897, Kolesnikov entered the Odessa Art School. Kolesnikov closely communicated with other future famous artists: I.I.Brodsky, M. B. Grekov (Martyshchenko), D. D. Burliuk. In 1903-1909 Kolesnikov studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts. He was admitted there without any entrance exams, which was made possible by his talent. Despite the offer to remain a teacher at the Imperial Academy of Arts, he, together with Brodsky and Grekov, went to St. Petersburg and became a student of Professor A. A. Kiselev and I. E. Repin. Around the same time, his works appear at the Spring Exhibition in the halls of the Academy. His painting "Spring" (1905) won the second prize and was acquired by the Museum of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Since that time, Kolesnikov has become a regular participant in exhibitions, almost every time receiving prizes that marked his best creations. He traveled a lot to the south of Russia, to Europe and Asia. The revolution in Russia in 1917 influenced the further fate of the artist. In 1919, the Kolesnikov family moved first to Greece and then to Serbia. It is known that he became a professor at the Belgrade Academy of Arts. In the 1920s, he organized several personal exhibitions in European countries. Sometimes he did work to order - for example, he painted the ceiling of the auditorium of the Opera House in Belgrade. The correspondence between S. F. Kolesnikov and I. E. Repin, which dates back to the period from 1925 to 1929, is of particular value. The last 12 years of his life, the artist was seriously ill (Parkinson's disease). Unable to work, he was forced to hire two young artists who, according to very general sketches, performed paintings, Kolesnikov then added some details and signed the works. Stepan Fedorovich Kolesnikov died in May 1955. He was buried in the New Cemetery in Belgrade, not far from the Iberian Chapel.
