Mouseman Two Tier Oak Tea Trolley
Circa 1950, large two tier oak tea trolley by Robert Mouseman. The large rectangular tops have proud upright supports. On the front edge of one is a carved mouse. There is a deep apron peg doweled into the top. The top has the classic Mouseman adze finish. The trolley finishes on four large polished steel and rubber castors. Good condition, and good example of Mouseman antique furniture.
Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson of Kilburn, Yorkshire was a prolific maker of the 1930's producing traditional handcrafted English oak furniture. It is claimed that the mouse motif came about accidentally in 1919 following a conversation about "being as poor as a church mouse", which took place between Thompson and one of his colleagues during the carving of a cornice for a screen. This chance remark led to him carving a mouse and this remained part of his work from this point onwards. 'The Mouseman' has since become known as one of the best craftsmen of the 20th century and his family firm of Robert Thompson's Craftsmen Ltd still today manufactures the highest quality English oak antique furniture in Kilburn, using the same traditional techniques and skills.
