Mid 19th century photograph / Carte De Visite Album
![](http://staticaz.antiquesatlas.com/images/loading_new.gif)
A high quality Morocco leather and gilt/ormolu mounted, photo and or CDV (carte de viste) album.
This particular album contains a few cartes, but it is the album and its pedigree that we find the most interesting. It has an unusual size being a landscape design rather than the more usual portrait form. The printed references refer to The London Stereoscopic Co. as they were the sole photographers to the International Exhibition of 1862, and further labels for S B Beal a close neighbour to LBC based on Cheapside near to St Pauls Cathedral probably the retailer of the LSC album. The Album can be dated as to being around 1866 , the company was using the trade mark of its 1856-1859 incarnation and it was quoting its Regent street premises which opened in 1866-67 as well as making reference to the International Exhibition of 1862
The Royal Garter mount to the front cover is part of the London Stereoscopic company printed trade mark. The quality of the album and its mounts is indicative of a premium product of the nineteenth century and part of the early development of the new paper mounted photographic prints known as Carte de Visite.
The carte de visite is a photograph mounted on a piece of card the size of a formal visiting card—hence the name. The format was patented in 1854 by the French photographer Andre Adolphe Eugene Disdéri (1819–89).
Cartes de visite were introduced to England in 1857. In May 1860, J.E. Mayall took carte portraits of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children. These were published later that year and the popularity of carte portraits soared.
The album is in very good condition, it is remarkably clean throughout and shows only minor signs of wear to the outside. The gilt is bright almost as new and the covering a great colour. It is 150 years old and basically cardboard but still mintains its integrity and ready to be used.
Size: 24 cm wide by 16 cm and thickness closed 4 cm Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
The Company is a distance selling business and as such abides by all current HM Government consumer regulations that apply to pre-owned, second hand, antique items sold online.
We welcome purchases from all over the world, however, we do not take any responsibility or pay for import charges and taxes that non UK purchasers may accrue.
