Max Sinclair Oil Painting Fl. 1880-1900
Max Sinclair Victorian Oil Painting Windermere Lake District
We are delighted to offer an oil on canvas by the accomplished and highly collectable artist MAX SINCLAIR, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and entitled it Lake Windermere and signed it with his monogram verso. The painting depicts a view of Lake Windermere, with the sun breaking through the clouds and reflecting in the surface of the lake. There is the figure of a woman sitting on a rock, jutting out from the right hand bank, with a couple of sailing boats near to the opposite shore. The painting has been executed in the artist's typical detailed fashion. This is a little gem of a painting by a very well appreciated artist.
As MAX SINCLAIR did not appear to exhibit his work, although a quite prolific artist, little is known about his life. The only biographical information we could find about him is listed in Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents', as follows-
'Painter of landscapes and marines in oil and watercolour. This prolific artist does not appear to have exhibited, although much of the work was inscribed and dated giving some indication of the period of his work and the location of the subjects. Most of the landscapes are views in Wales and Scotland and the majority date from the early 1880s. The marine subjects include views of the London and Liverpool docks. Many of his paintings were signed with a monogram (see index).'
Regarding the above, both of the paintings that we have offered for sale have been views of the Lake District.
Auction results for this artist are available on artprice.com (62 listings), artnet.com (49), findartinfo.com (24), arcadja.com (17) and Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market. The record price for one of his paintings at auction in recent years has been £2,800.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3" gilt frame which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
