Mary Coulon-Serra French Oil Chateau de Pornic
We are offering this large oil on canvas by the French artist Mary (Marie) Coulon-Serra, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. According to the inscription on the reverse of the canvas, the location of the view is the Port and Chateau of Pornic, which is in the Loire-Atlantique departement of France. Having looked up the Chatea de Pornic on google, this is a very accurate representation. It shows the Chateau, with its various turrets and chimneys, surrounded by trees, with a group of fishing boats with autumnal coloured sails at anchor in a calm sea. The Commune of Pornic is 50 km from Nantes.
As well as the location inscription on the back of the canvas, it is stated that the painting was 'Ex Salon Violet 1966'. Having done some research, it would appear that this painting was exhibited at the Salon Violet - Association Nationale des Palmes Academiques Section Beaux Arts which took place at the Grand Palais Paris 1st - 9th April 1966.
Mary Coulon-Serra, sometimes listed as Marie, was born in Paris in 1888 and was possibly married to the artist Rene Emile Charles Coulon, whose work bears a considerable resemblance to hers. She was a student of Humbert and was made a Member of the Societaire des Artistes Francaise in 1938. (Source Benezit)
There are some listings for her work in this country, with a pair of 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" oils being sold by Christie's in 1998 for £1,035.
The painting is framed in what is probably its original 3 1/2" mottled cream and gilt frame and linen slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size 28" x 23" - 71.1cm x 58.45cm
Frame size 35 1/8" x 30 3/8" - 89.2cm x 74.55cm
