Maple & Co Satinwood & Inlaid Card Table Edwardian
From the late 19th century British manufacturer Maple & Co traded from premises in Tottenham Court Road, London, as well as locations in Paris and Buenos Aires. Recognised for their craftsmanship and fine quality this large firm specialised in furniture and upholstery. Their reputation helped to assemble an impressive client list which included Royal customers such as Queen Victoria and King's Edward VII and George V.
Maple & Co became one of the most fashionable and successful brands in the Victorian and Edwardian period. This card table, currently available to purchase, is from those glory days and manufactured around 1905-1910.
We will start our description by explaining that this piece of furniture is in remarkable, almost untouched condition. Totally original it needed nothing more than a wax and polish to bring the wood and lovely decoration back to life.
Made of beautiful satinwood which has developed a rich colour. The inlaid string and scroll detailing is made with craftsmanship of the highest level. The square shaped top is assembled in an envelope shape. An ingenious opening system rotates the table top and at the same time lifts the centre corner of one of the wooden flaps. In total four separate pieces turn over to uncover the gaming top which is a green baize with an embossed border. This playing surface is completely original, with just a few small marks of wear. Four gaming wells, one set into each corner and the surrounded wood, are in beautiful condition.
The table is fitted with a compact drawer with an ornate decorated front to keep the sets of gaming cards safe. Two swan neck shaped handles are still covered with the original water gilding.
The tapered legs, again with lovely detailing, are horizontally supported by a cross stretcher that is topped with a large turned finial. Fitted with quality metal castors to move the gaming table around with ease.

Condition The offered piece is without a doubt the best example of this design that we have ever seen. The card table is completely untouched and in original condition. With some small marks of wear consistent with age. It has been waxed and carefully polished to retain the character. A beautiful piece of history that is very useable today.
