Low-Back Windsor Armchairs, Set of 6, C1840

WELL MATCHED SET OF SIX LOW BACK WINDSOR ARMCHAIRS C1840
A well matched set of six low back Windsor armchairs in yew and fruitwood with elm seats, c1840. These chairs are in the style of John and Elizabeth Gabibitass of Worksop and evidence features of the ‘best’ chairs from the Nottinghamshire tradition, including elaborately fretted ‘fancy’ splats, distinctive tapered turned arm supports, notches to the underside of the ends of the arm bow and curved ‘crinoline’ stretchers uniting the front legs, as well as the use of superbly figured yew In the splats. One chair bears the label of a 19th century Nottingham retailer ‘Keeling’s’ under the seat - possibly the original retailer of the chair. (2 x very similar chairs available to make a set of 8.)
The Real Wood Furniture(Chris Baylis) has large showrooms in the Cotswolds, specialising in English Windsor chairs, but also stocking an eclectic mix of decorative and fine furniture, objects, garden pieces etc.
