Lovely C18th Solid Oak Deudarn Court Cupboard
This lovely antique deudarn dates from around 1740-1750. It is constructed from solid oak throughout and is very heavy. The top part of the deudarn has pronounced cornice with downward-facing finials at the front. Beneath this are three cupboards with panelled doors, all of which have a single fixed shelf inside. The middle cupboard retains its lock and a working key. The other two cupboards do not retain their locks, but can be fixed closed using pull latches inside the middle cupboard. The bottom section consists of three drawers over a two-door cupboard with panelled doors and a single fixed shelf inside. The cupboard doors retain wooden knob handles and their original blacksmith show H-hinges. The deudarn has panelled sides and is supported on short wooden legs. The piece is of nice proportions and splits in two for ease of transportation (although the purchaser should be aware that both parts are extremely heavy). The piece came to us from the Upton House Estate, in Banbury Oxfordshire, and we believe that the piece was orginally in Upton House itself. Upton House is now a National Trust property.
Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some heavy scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some signs of old repair and alteration. There are some areas of minor wood loss, including a larger areas of wood loss to the right-hand back leg. There are some signs of old woodworm damage, including to the back boards - this is not active, but has been retreated as a precaution. The insides of the cupboards are lined with a blue sticky-back lining - this is a later addition and has some tearing, loss and damage.
The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 176cm high, 162cm wide, 60.5cm deep (to maximums). Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
We can arrange delivery of both smaller items and furniture - please contact us for details and a quote. Customers are also welcome to use their own couriers if preferred.
Payment can be made by PayPal, bank transfer, cheque [UK only], and cash on collection.
