Leader Oil on Canvas Lake District view
We are offering for sale this oil on canvas which is signed in the lower right hand corner LEADER. We have found three British artists with this name, Benjamin Williams Leader, his son Benjamin Eastlake Leader and Charles Leader, who was no relation to the others. The signature looks very like Charles Leader, although normally he signs Ch. or Charles, so we leave it to the buyer to do their own research and make their own attribution.
On the stretcher of the painting, there is a partially indistict inscription, which we believe says Crummock xxxxx the Bridge of xxxxxx. Having looked at many images of Crummock Water in the Lake District, we believe this is a view of that location. The rolling hills, with snow capped hills in the background and the vegetation confirm this belief that it is the Lake District rather than Scotland.
The painting is framed in a very nice 4"ornate swept gilt frame and giltwood slip, which suit it very well.
