Le Jardin du Luxembourg, Paris, Anne Goldthwaite
Painting by Anne Goldthwaite (1869-1944)
Born into a distinguished family from Montgomery, Alabama. She moved from New York to Paris in 1906 where she first met the American writer Gertrude Stein while out painting in the Luxembourg Gardens. Stein invited Goldthwaite to visit her apartment where she later recounted walking into a beautiful large studio with walls covered in the most remarkable pictures. It was Goldthwaite's first introduction to the modernist Fauve and Cubist paintings of Matisse and Picasso. Thanks to her friendship with Stein she became a close part of their art circle.
She returned to New York in 1913 where she exhibited at the Armory Show alongside artists such as Mary Cassatt, Paul Cézanne,Edgar Degas,Vincent Van Gogh,Henri Matisse,Pablo Picasso and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. A large collection of her paintings and prints are held at the Metropolitan Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Signed and inscribed in capitals by the artist on the reverse.
Framed in a canvas slip and gilt frame.
